The operation of a poultry farm is different if it is intended for egg or meat production.



In the first case, laying hens are selected and placed in chicken coops where they are fed until they start laying eggs, which usually happens after 18 months. The eggs obtained are distributed for commercialization.



In the second case, chickens are bought to be used for meat production and are fed for 6 to 8 weeks, the time it takes to reach the appropriate weight. Once this ideal weight is reached, the animals are slaughtered, and the meat obtained is commercialized.

According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, in January 2024, there were 23,230 poultry farms, of which 7,479 were for egg-laying and meat production, 4,720 were dedicated exclusively to meat production, and 2,131 were for egg-laying hens only.
