The cortijo sits 1.5 kms up the side of the Contraviesa, the foothills that separate the Alpujarras from the coast. From the property, almost the entire length of the Sierra Nevada can be seen and the main focus is Mulhacén, the highest peak in the range. To the west can be seen the mountains above the Lecrín Valley and towards the east can be seen the villages dotting the Alpujarras towards Yegen and Valor.

This estate was developed as a farm by the current owners, with specific reference to the growing of vines and the production of good quality natural wines. The entire property has been a labour of love, from the creation of flexible accommodation built on the site of the ruined previous cortijo, to the planting and nurturing of the vines. It’s such a glorious place, with room for all sorts of further development: equestrian pursuits; eco-tourism (the owners have held wine tastings here alongside cookery and artisan courses); cultural events; goat cheese production and honey production.

The very solid structure allows for a lot of flexibility in the creation of interior spaces, and it has evolved over the years since 2005, when the old ruin was purchased. The house can be used as a single family home or as two separate apartments. The property is in excellent condition.

The ground floor guest apartment has a large, open-plan living room/kitchen and two spacious bedrooms. Shower room. This, in itself, is one source of income generation, as a self-catering holiday rental property.

The upper ground floor apartment has its own entrances on both the upper and lower ground floors. The feature of this main apartment is the wonderful and enormous open-plan living room. The structure makes this possible, so there is a clear span, and yet each living area still feels intimate a comfortable. The sitting room is arranged around a wood burning stove that fuels the underfloor heating. Windows provide views in every direction, and the dining area sits in the centre of the room.

The large kitchen is a cook’s dream with an island, extensive marble work-surfaces and two ovens. It’s easy to see how cookery courses could be run in this convivial space: Mediterranean cuisine washed down by home-produced wine.

There is a small terrace outside the kitchen and beyond the main living room there is a huge terrace that leads to the pool (9 m x 4 m)

Set apart from the main house is the Bodega, and this has been developed as a serious wine-producing hub, getting the relevant licences every year for the creation of natural wines. There are separate rooms for staff preparation, wine fermentation and bottling, with additional rooms for use as offices and for wine-tastings. At the moment, the vineyard can produce between 3,000 - 6,000 bottle a year, depending on the harvest, but production could be increased with further investment. The Contraviesa is an area renowned for its fine wine, helping to put Granada firmly on the Spanish wine map.

At the rear of the bodega, there is further accommodation that could be upgraded to provide another 2 double bedroom guest apartment with a large living area and kitchen, and enormous shower room.
