What varieties of lemons are produced in Spain?
The two main lemon varieties produced in Spain are Mesero, also known as the fine variety, and Verna. However, other varieties have also been cultivated in the country in recent years, such as Eureka and Lisbon, which come from the United States.
Mesero. This is the most important variety, as it accounts for more than 70% of the lemon production in the country. Its cultivation is mainly found in the Region of Murcia, the Valencian Community, and Andalusia. The fruits of this variety are smaller in size than those of the Verna variety. These lemons are used both for fresh consumption (homemade juices and refreshments or for seasoning) and for the production of natural juices and concentrates.
Verna. This native variety of unknown origin is the second most important variety in Spain, accounting for more than 20% of the national lemon production. The Verna variety is produced in Murcia, the Valencian Community (especially in the province of Alicante), and Andalusia (mostly in the provinces of Málaga and Almería).
