According to the 2020 Agricultural Census (the most recent), there are more than 61,000 sheep farms in Spain, totaling more than 16 million heads.
In terms of the number of farms, Andalusia leads with 10,174 farms and nearly 2.6 million heads. It is followed by Extremadura, with 9,142 farms and 3.8 million heads, and Castilla y León, with 7,273 farms and 2.7 million heads.
What is the importance of the sheep farming sector in Spain?
Spain is a leader in sheep farming in the European Union, with around 14 million heads, of which 80% are intended for meat production and only 6% for milk. By autonomous communities, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Andalusia, and Aragón stand out as the main regions.
Although the consumption of sheep meat in the country is lower compared to other meats, Spain plays a relevant role as an exporter due to the quality of its products, certified by Protected Designations of Origin (D.O.P) and Protected Geographical Indications (I.G.P). Each year, it exports tons of sheep products to various countries in the EU and other parts of the world.
