Hunting grounds—areas where hunting is allowed—are classified in Castilla y León as Regional Hunting Reserves, hunting grounds, and federated hunting grounds. Therefore, hunting grounds in Castilla y León can be either private (managed by the landowner, who may be an individual or a legal entity) or federated (managed by a federated hunting club). In a private hunting ground in Castilla y León, the owner generally aims to obtain an economic benefit from the activity, whereas in a federated ground, management is carried out on a non-profit basis.

Castilla y León generally has a rich hunting tradition due to its diverse landscapes, including mountains, plains, and forests. This makes it an ideal habitat for many game species. Among the areas with the greatest tradition are the province of Salamanca (Las Batuecas National Game Reserve) and the province of Burgos (Sierra de La Demanda Regional Game Reserve). Likewise, the province of Ávila (Sierra de Gredos Regional Park) and the province of León (Ancares Reserve) also stand out.

To establish a hunting ground in Castilla y León, one must be the holder of the right to game exploitation on 75% of the area to be enclosed. This right may be held as an owner, as the holder of other real or personal rights that entail the use of game exploitation, or as a lessee. The ownership must be maintained for at least the hunting season in which the ground is established and the four following seasons. In the case of wanting to establish an intensive hunting ground, the holder must have the right to game exploitation for 100% of the area to be enclosed. This area must be between 10 and 250 hectares for small game, or between 150 and 500 hectares for big game. Additionally, the land must have a low density of game species. Hunting grounds in Castilla y León must be signposted as required by law.

To hunt in the hunting grounds of Castilla y León, one must have a hunting license, as well as the relevant permits and firearm documentation. Additionally, a written authorization from the landowner must be obtained, and a civil liability insurance policy for hunters must be contracted if using a firearm.

In the hunting grounds of Castilla y León, it is permitted to hunt both migratory and resident birds, such as the common quail, woodcock, pheasant, magpie, northern shoveler, and the starling, among others. It is also possible to hunt big game species such as wild boar, red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, chamois, Iberian ibex, and mouflon.

In big game hunting, allowed methods include montería (driven hunt), gancho (small driven hunt), stalking, waiting or ambush, and hunting on the move or in hand. In small game hunting, permitted methods include hunting on the move, in hand, driven hunt (ojeo), and waiting or ambush. Hunting hares with greyhounds, rabbits with ferrets, foxes with burrowing dogs, wood pigeons and thrushes at flyways, and waterfowl from fixed positions is also allowed. Additionally, organized small game shoots are authorized.
