The types of hunting grounds in Catalonia are Private Hunting Areas, Local Hunting Areas, Controlled Hunting Zones, National Game Reserves, and Game Reserves.

The largest hunting ground in Catalonia, and one of the biggest in Spain, is the Alt Pirineu Natural Park. This natural area, created in 2003, covers 70,000 hectares across the counties of Pallars Sobirà and Alt Urgell. It is home to a high number of roe deer, red deer, fallow deer, mouflons, wild boars, and chamois.

Hunting activity in Catalonia is regulated through the hunting ban order. This regulation establishes the huntable species, hunting periods, and authorized methods. The hunting ban order is generally updated each year.

To establish a hunting ground in Catalonia, a minimum land area is required. This area depends on two factors: the number of owners and the type of game mainly hunted. Grounds with a single owner must have at least 250 hectares for small game and 500 hectares for big game. Grounds with multiple owners require a minimum of 500 hectares for small game and 1,000 hectares for big game.

The process to establish a hunting ground in this region can take up to six months, starting from the submission of the creation request for the hunting area.

It is difficult to determine an exact cost for maintaining a hunting ground in Catalonia. The cost will depend on the size of the ground, the type of hunting practiced, and the number of managed species. It is also affected by management services hired and environmental conservation measures implemented.

Game species—those animals allowed to be hunted in Catalonia—include for big game: wild boar, chamois, Iberian ibex, mouflon, red deer, fallow deer, and roe deer. For small game, hunting is allowed for mammals such as the rabbit, European and Iberian hare, and the fox. Birds may also be hunted, including the red-legged and rock partridge, quail, pheasant, wood pigeon, stock dove and rock dove, magpie, woodcock, starling, and the common, redwing, and mistle thrush. Some waterfowl species are also allowed, such as the mallard, gadwall, pintail, Eurasian wigeon, northern shoveler, common teal, red-crested pochard, common coot, black-headed gull, yellow-legged gull, and common snipe.
